Breast augmentation is a procedure in which implants (silicon) are used to enlarge and enhance the breasts size, giving the breasts more natural contour and giving the body more aesthetically pleasing proportions. Reasons for Considering Breast Augmentation: . Enhance body shape if breasts are too small. . Increase breast volume after pregnancy and nursing. . Equalize a difference in breast size (cup size) to gain breast symmetry. Each breast augmentation procedure is customized to best accomplish that patient’s individual goals and needs, so there are a number of decisions to be made about the placement, type of implants, and the type of incision used for the procedure. Breast Implant Placement There are various positions in which breast implants can be placed, each with its own benefits and drawbacks eg subcutaneous, submuscular or partially subcutaneous and partially submuscular. Types of Implants There are two primary types of implants currently available: silicone and saline-filled. Silicone implants are the most commonly used in augmentation but saline implants have specific indications. Silicone implants consist of an outer shell made of rubber-like silicone, and a filling of silicone in a gel consistency. Currently silicone breast implants have been approved by the FDA for all women 20 years and older. Silicone implants are available in a variety of types, shapes, and sizes. Your surgeon will help you decide which will be best for you. You will also have an opportunity to “try on” silicone implants in various sizes and shapes during your private breast implant sizing session with our patient care coordinator. How is Breast Augmentation Performed? Breast augmentation involves making a small incision to insert a breast implant into the breast in order to enlarge the breast. The surgery is commonly performed on an outpatient basis at a hospital while the patient is under a general or local anesthesia. There are several possible locations for the small incision that will be used for inserting the breast implant. The best technique will be decided together between the patient and Dr. during the consultation. Types of Incision The three most common incisions are in the infra-mammary fold, trans-axillary , and peri-areolar. Each approach has its’ advantages and disadvantages. Your surgeon will discuss with you to reach the best approach. What is the Recovery Process for Breast Augmentation? Recovery requires 5-10 days of limited activity. Patients can usually return to work after or during this, and they may gradually increase their level of activity between 2-4 weeks
